From the Roman amphitheater to the “Cité arénoise,” this iconic monument in Arles has remained, over the centuries, a vibrant place shaped by its various uses.
Originally designed as a venue for public spectacles in antiquity, it became a fortified enclosure in the Middle Ages, then a residential area that, as late as the early 19th century, still housed 200 homes, two chapels, shops, and more…
In 1830, it returned to its original purpose by hosting the first bull run.
