For its annual symposium, the Académie d’Arles chose to explore the theme of stone in a region situated at the intersection of three distinct geological formations: a wetland where stone is entirely absent, an alluvial zone rich in pebbles “imported” from the Alps, and a rocky massif that, from antiquity to the present day, has provided the very material for our most illustrious monuments.
Building on a review of the geological context, the presentations will explore the role of this material in relation to construction and heritage preservation: quarrying, trades and craftsmanship, its use in both local and more distant architectural traditions, international exchanges, and more. They will also provide an opportunity to offer new perspectives on this local stone from the Arles region, which can be found in archives, literature, and photographs now held in the public collections of the city’s museums.
