The Cairn Consort’s mission? To create a lasting ensemble, inspired by the dynamics of modern chamber music, to offer a lively, vibrant, and resolutely contrasting interpretation of the viol consort repertoire.
For this inaugural program, the Cairn Consort is joined by theorbo player Daniel Zapico and takes on the three Royall Consorts by William Lawes, a composer who single-handedly embodies the pioneering spirit the ensemble seeks to instill in its music.
These works dare to break the conventions of their time: bold harmonies, unpredictable rhythms, and a formal freedom that almost heralds the end of the Baroque era.
Supported by La Belle Saison, the Cairn Consort will present this program beginning in the 2026–2027 season, marking the start of a promising artistic journey.
