Salons, literary meetings, workshops, musical readings
This year’s event will take place at the Espace Van Gogh, a landmark Arles venue dedicated to books and knowledge, home to the media library, the municipal archives, the international college of literary translators and the Aix-Marseille university branch. Five Arles bookshops will host a salon showcasing selected editions, and, in conjunction with ATLAS, the association for the promotion of literary translation, will offer a dozen meetings with authors. The municipal archives will be organizing a historians’ salon in conjunction with Arles associations.
Following the cancellation of the visit by Monica Acito and her translator Laura Brignon, the following event will be held as a replacement.
Salon des libraires / Saturday February 21, 5pm-6pm
Writing, translating, retranslating and rewriting. Rencontre with author Adam Biles (Bêtes d’Angleterre, ed. Grasset, to be published April 8, 2026) and translator Charles Recoursé, hosted by Maya Michalon. Performer: Valentine Leÿs. Proposed by ATLAS – Association pour la promotion de la traduction littéraire.
ATLAS, which supports the Collège international des traducteurs littéraires, is honoring Charles Recoursé, one of the most prominent translators of his generation, most recently noted for his retranslations of William Faulkner (Le Bruit et la Fureur), John Steinbeck (Les Raisins de la Colère), and George Orwell (La Ferme des animaux, ed. Gallimard 2021). As well as translating many contemporary voices, he invites us to preview Adam Biles, author of Bêtes d’Angleterre (to be published by Grasset in April), in which he reactivates Orwell’s fable through a “farmer’s novel” populated by traitors, manipulators and corrupt charlatans. Together, they will discuss the retranslation of writing and the translation of rewriting.
