This project has been designated as part of the “Bicentennial of Photography” by the Ministry of Culture and is included in the official program for the Bicentennial, which runs from September 1, 2026, to September 30, 2027.
This celebration in Arles aims to explore—through a major exhibition in the city and an expanded cultural program—the deep connections between the photographic image and the memory of places, as reflected in nearly 200 years of images of the town.
Invented almost simultaneously in the first half of the 19th century, photography and the General Inspectorate of Cultural Heritage share the same relationship to time: to capture, preserve, and transmit.
