With the exhibition “The Transit of Venus,” the museum became fascinated by all these depictions of goddesses—scantily clad or naked, with their hair tied back or loose, but always hairless around the pubic area—while the male statues suggest a penis of moderate size but are dominated by an artistically rendered pubic tuft.
Why such a difference between female and male representations?
We wanted to learn more about the relationship between body hair and the artist across different eras and media, and to understand the ambiguity raised by such a comparison.
