In a sensitive reinterpretation of classical Persian music, this quartet, created in 2021, captures the plural memory of the ancient Persian Empire: from Central Asia to the Caucasus and North India. In analogy with La Conférence des Oiseaux by Farid al-Din-Attâr (a 12th-century Sufi poet), each instrument here takes free flight while participating in the collective quest of King Simorgh, a metaphor for grandeur and transcendence. Emancipating themselves from the shackles of tradition while extending its transmission, their compositions accompany mystical poems burning with love and wine. Chanting chanted in mezza voce, tones with discreet nuances and yet complex ornamentation, repetitive phrasing… recreate the gentle emotional force of modal music.
