Invited for a creative residency by the Direction du Patrimoine et de la Culture, culminating in a major exhibition on the Alycamps site, visual artist Florence Grundeler travels back and forth between the Alycamps and her studio to imagine, think and create a series of works that echo the ancient site.
With respect for this historic site, Florence Grundeler creates works from the beginning of the sarcophagus alley to the exit of the Saint-Honorat church. This path, like a punctuation mark, invites visitors to enter into a rhythm, so that they can let themselves be carried away by their imagination and the story that the site and the artist will tell them.
Time being the raw material of Florence Grundeler’s aesthetic research, she explores on canvas, steel, tarlatan, with ink, ash, pigments and thread, the most resonant paths with this mythical place.
For this exhibition, 22 pieces are placed outdoors, steel sculptures, called “Paratemps”, before the chapel of Sainte Accurse and the church of Saint-Honorat, a set of plaques, “Les jours”, slightly elevated in the sarcophagus alley to the edge of the excavations.
Inside: hanging canvases, canvas sticks and installations are set up in each of the chapels.
“To be a guest at Les Alyscamps for one spring is a challenge, an honor and an immense pleasure,” confides the artist.
