The River Rhône in the Camargue

The birth and history of the Camargue cannot be separated from its river. Today, the Rhône still remains one of the main actors in the economic life of the Delta.

Its freshwaters desalinate the land and make it suitable for crops farming. It has also been an essential trade route to the Mediterranean since Roman times.

The river harbor of Arles still serves some 30 European and Mediterranean sea links per day and transits more than 500,000 tonnes of goods every year.
