Rice culture
Visit the Maison du Riz to discover how the “queen” of cultures in the Camargue grows. The rice farmers Jacques and Françoise are keen to pass on their passion and know-how acquired for several generations. La Maison du Riz is both their operating site and a museum. They designed a trail, an educational space and a shop.
Know all of Camargue (or most of it)
Could there be any better way to understand the special layouts of the Camargue than by visiting a museum 100% dedicated to this very special area? A free 4-kilometers discovery trail completes the visit and takes you to reedbeds, marshes and rice fields.
Stories of the Camargue and its people
Along the ViaRhôna cycling trail, 12 audio stops guide you through the discovery of different little-known aspects of the landscape. An amazing journey.
Meet a manadier
You simply cannot visit Camargue without stopping by a manade. On these breeding farms, black bulls and white horses live in perfect symbiosis with men and natural spaces. The manadiers breed their bulls and prepare the most athletic ones for the Camargue bull races. Watch the sorting of livestock, a ferrade and share the life of the “cowboys” of the Camargue.
Watch pink flamingos
Bring your binoculars and spotting scopes, and… shh, just watch! You have the choice between many observation sites : the Domaine de la Palissade, the Marais du Vigueirat, the Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau, the Fangassier pond… Take a self-guided tour or choose a nature guide to learn more about these emblematic birds. In winter, you can attend their parade, a colorful show that you will never forget.
Meet Julius Caesar
In 2008, a life-size bust of Julius Caesar was discovered during a dive into the river Rhône. It was probably made during his lifetime. It’s an exceptional discovery because it is the oldest known effigy of the Emperor as researchers date it to around 46 BC, time of the creation of the colony of Arles. Discover the Musée d’Arles Antique and its exceptional archaeological collection where mythology meets history.
Follow the trail of the Camargue horse
The Maison du Cheval at the Mas de la Cure is a manade with white Camargue horses. Its passionate team brings the place alive for visitors. Approach the exceptional Camargue horse in its natural environment (the path is accessible to strollers) and learn more about the fauna and flora of the area. A demonstration of Camargue horse riding is also on the program of your visit.
Sail the Rhône
The Rhône is the architect of the Camargue. Sailing on this river will allow you to discover the evolution and shapes of the island of Camargue. Embark on the Tiki 3, a typical paddle steamer, and discover the heart of the Camargue which is only accessible by water: from the embouchure of the Petit Rhône to the Bac du Sauvage! You will be guided by the comments of the captain, observe the fauna and flora and visit a manade during a stopover halfway down the river.
