It is the result of several centuries of human intervention and country planning to canalize freshwater and saltwater. By modifying its natural course, men have weakened the ecosystem of the largest European wetland. The development of tourism, coastal erosion and global warming are also important issues for this fragile territory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inhabitants, economic stakeholders and public institutions have quickly realized that it is essential to preserve this unique territory. In 1927, its ecological importance was recognized by the French State by listing it among the National Nature Reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key dates:\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1927<\/strong>: Creation of the <em>R\u00e9serve naturelle nationale de Camargue du Vaccar\u00e8s<\/em>, first reserve in France<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1970<\/strong>: Creation of the Camargue Regional Natural Park<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1977<\/strong>: Classification of the Camargue as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1986<\/strong>: Classification as a <em>Ramsar <\/em>site\u00a0: wetlands of international importance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2011<\/strong>: Creation of the natural area of the <em>Marais du Vigueirat<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2013<\/strong>: Creation of the <em>R\u00e9serve marine de Beauduc<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2014<\/strong>: Classification as a Natura 2000 site<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National or Regional Nature Reserve &#8211; what\u2019s the difference?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Their names sound similar, but their purpose is very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A nature reserve<\/strong> has a regulatory power allowing it to prohibit any destruction and modification of the environment. Its primary goal is to protect an area as well as the species, fauna and flora that occupy it. As a result, certain activities may be prohibited and human activity is very limited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A regional natural park<\/strong> is an open territory. Its management institution has no regulatory authority. Only current regulations apply. Individuals can live in these areas and carry out economic activities. The role of the Park is to ensure the maintenance of natural and cultural heritage, but also to support economic stakeholders and enhance sustainable management throughout the territory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Camargue Regional Natural Park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Camargue is a wetland of international importance benefitting from its grand reputation and several protection systems. But it is also an inhabited rural area with major economic activities. The Regional Natural Park operates on the whole area of the <em>Grande Camargue<\/em>, leading pluriannual projects in consultation with locals and visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its main mission is to find a balance between sustainable human activities and nature protection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protection and management of the natural, cultural and landscape heritage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economic, social and cultural development and planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Welcoming, raising awareness and educating the public<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experimentation of new management methods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Park also coordinates actions taken by different public and private stakeholders, partners and\u00a0 associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contrat de Delta, charte du Parc naturel r\u00e9gional de Camargue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year, the Camargue Regional Natural Park offers activities and animations for schools, students and visitors. It can count on the support of different institutional partners on a local, regional and national level: the Provence-Alpes-C\u00f4te-D\u2019azur Regional Council, the department of the Bouches-du-Rh\u00f4ne, the Ministry of Environment, regional State offices in charge of the environment, the Federation of all French Regional Natural Parks, the towns of Arles, Les Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer, Port Saint-Louis du Rh\u00f4ne, the district Arles-Crau-Camargue-Montagnette, the Water Agency Rh\u00f4ne-M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e and Corsica and the <em>Conservatoire du littoral.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Conservatoire du littoral<\/em> is a very important stakeholder. It is the owner of more than 20,000 hectares of land which is managed by its partners: the Regional Natural Park and&nbsp; the <em>Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de protection de la Nature<\/em>. There are also other stakeholders who intervene in land control in order to protect natural areas. The department of the Bouches-du-Rh\u00f4ne is one of them. There is also the foundation of <em>La Tour du Valat<\/em>, founded by the ornithologist Luc Hoffmann in the 1950s. He bought more than 2,000 hectares of land for research projects. At the same time, another bird enthusiast, Andr\u00e9 Lamouroux, decided to showcase the birds that occupy his land in Pont-de-Gau. His son took over in 1974. Today, the Pont de Gau bird park allows you to discover wildlife in its natural environment on 7 kilometers of discovery trails across an area of 60 hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-and-text\">\n\n    <div class=\"container\">\n        \n        <div class=\"row align-items-center\">\n\n            <div class=\"col-img col-12 col-md-6 order-2 order-md-1\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/destination-camargue.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PNRC_Peche-AMP-bd-794x550.jpg\" alt=\"P\u00eache en Camargue\" \/>\n                            <\/div>\n\n            <div class=\"col-block text-start col-12 col-md-6 order-1 order-md-2\"><div class=\"block\"><div class=\"block-content \">\n\n                <h4 class=\"has-light-green-color\">Professionals committed to the Beauduc Marine Reserve<\/h4>\n\n                <div class=\"entry-content\">Created by professional fishermen in 2013, this area of 450 hectares is prohibited from fishing, dredging, diving and anchoring. Only navigation is permitted. The goal is to restore a nursery area for flatfish, after years of illegal fishing called \u00abtrolling\u00bb that had weakened the resource. The results are visible: the entire Gulf of Beauduc, even outside the cantonment, has benefited from this protection and the near-total stop of illegal trawling.
